Family Friendly Hikes on O’ahu

If you’re the outdoorsy type, Hawaii has so much to offer in terms of outdoor activities. More specifically, it has incredible natural landscapes and you’re guaranteed to experience nothing short of beautiful when going on hikes. This article will highlight family-friendly hiking trails or trails for beginner hikers! If you decide to try one of these trails, don’t forget to take pictures and tag us so we can see your adventures!

  1. Kolekole Trail
  2. Likeke Falls
  3. Manoa Falls
  4. Aiea Loop to the Bench
  5. Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden

Kolekole Trail

1492 Trimble Rd.
Schofield Barracks, HI

Take Trimble Rd all the way to the end where it’ll then turn into Kolekole Rd. Proceed through the gate and down the road until you see a dirt parking lot on your left with the trail behind it.

Information:

  • You must have base access or obtain a visitor’s pass
  • This trail is only open during certain times which you can see HERE
  • ¾ of a mile
  • Bring sunscreen and mosquito repellent 

Difficulty Level:

  • Up to 5 years old: moderate
  • Ages 5 and older: easy
  • Babywearing: easy

Likeke Falls

45-550 Kionaole Rd
Kaneohe, HI

Information:

Paid parking ($10) is available at the Ko’Olau Golf Course which grants you easier access to the trail.

  • Very muddy and slippery after rainfall which adds on difficulty level
  • Shady, but bring mosquito repellent
  • About ¾ of a mile

Difficulty Level (without rainfall):

  • Ages 2 and under: moderate
  • Ages 2 and older: easy
  • Babywearing: easy

Manoa Falls

3860 Manoa Rd.
Honolulu, HI

Information:

  • 1.5 miles round trip
  • Parking is $3 with Hawaii or military ID if you pay inside the store, $5 if paying parking attendant
  • Muddy and slippery after rainfall
  • Shady, but bring mosquito repellent 

Difficulty Level:

  • Ages 2 and under: hard
  • Ages 2-5: moderate
  • Ages 5 and older: easy
  • Babywearing: moderate

Water Fall from Manoa Falls

Aiea Loop to the Bench

99-1849 Aiea Heights Dr.
Aiea, HI

Information:

The trail itself is longer, but the trail leading up to the bench is family-friendly whereas anything further is more difficult.

  • Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area hours of operation:
    • April 1 to Labor Day: 7 am to 7:45 pm
    • After Labor Day to March 31: 7 am to 6:45 pm
  • Entire trail is 5 miles, but stopping at the bench is a great turn around point for smaller hikers
  • Keep a lookout for the wreckage of a B-24J bomber that crashed in May of 1944 if you go further than the bench

Difficulty Level:

  • Ages 2 and under: moderate
  • Ages 2 and older: easy
  • Babywearing: easy

Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden

45-680 Luluku Rd.
Kaneohe, HI

Information:

STROLLER FRIENDLY

  • Hours of operation are 9:00am – 4:00pm
  • Bring sunscreen and mosquito repellent
  • Weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) there is catch-and-release fishing from 10:00am – 2:00pm (bamboo poles provided

Difficulty Level:

  • All ages: easy
