Up in the Air: A Military Spouse’s Guide to Surviving the Flight with Pets During a PCS Move
As military spouses, we’re no strangers to the emotional ebb and flow of a PCS move. When you add a furry family member into the mix, the concerns can double. Having gone through this experience myself, I want to share some practical tips that will help your beloved pet have a safer and more comfortable journey.

1. Visit the Vet:
Ensure your pet is fit for travel, especially by air. Your vet will carry out necessary health checks and update any vaccinations that may be required. This is also a good time to discuss any concerns about your pet’s anxiety levels during the flight.

2. Understand Airline Policies:
Each airline has different policies regarding pet travel. Some allow small pets in the cabin, while others may require them to be in the cargo hold. Familiarize yourself with the specific rules of your chosen airline to ensure a smooth journey.
3. Invest in a Comfortable Carrier:
A well-ventilated, secure, and comfortable carrier is essential for your pet’s welfare during the flight. Make sure it complies with airline standards. Introduce the carrier to your pet well ahead of the travel date to help them get used to it.
4. Keep Calm and Carry On:
Pets often mirror their human’s emotions, so staying calm and positive can help ease your pet’s anxiety. Speak to them in soothing tones and keep your goodbyes short to avoid stressing them out.
5. Mind the Meals:
Avoid feeding your pet a large meal before the flight to minimize discomfort. However, ensure they are well-hydrated. Check with your vet about the appropriate food and water intake before the flight.
6. Pack Essentials:
Pack a travel bag for your pet with essentials such as a leash, blanket, a few treats, and a familiar toy. If allowed by the airline, attach a water bottle to the carrier.
7. Prepare for Arrival:
Arrange for a comfortable setting upon arrival where your pet can relax and get used to the new environment. Remember, they will need some time to adjust just like you will.
Navigating a PCS move with pets can be challenging, but as military spouses, we have an innate capacity to handle these challenges with grace and resilience. At The PCS Planners, we understand the unique situations that military families encounter because we’ve lived them.
