A Paws-itive Approach: Helping Your Pet Navigate the Emotional Landscape of a PCS Move

As military spouses who have been through the whirlwind of a PCS move, we understand the rollercoaster of emotions involved – not just for us, but also for our furry family members. Moving can be stressful for pets as they too are leaving their familiar surroundings. This blog post shares insights and strategies on how you can help your pet navigate this emotionally challenging time.

1. Maintain Routine:

Animals thrive on routine. Amidst the chaos of packing, try to maintain your pet’s regular schedule for feeding, walks, and playtime. This semblance of normalcy can provide comfort and security during a potentially confusing time.

2. Familiarity Breeds Comfort:

Introduce the carrier or crate your pet will be transported in well in advance of the move. This allows your pet to associate the carrier with safety and comfort. You can place familiar blankets or toys inside to create a comforting space.

3. Calm Your Pet:

Some pets may require more than just comforting words and familiar surroundings to deal with the stress of a move. If your pet shows signs of severe anxiety, such as changes in appetite or behavior, consult your vet about possible calming treatments.

4. Gradual Introduction:

Once you arrive at your new home, give your pet time to adjust. Allow them to explore their new surroundings at their own pace. Be there to comfort and reassure them.

5. Positive Reinforcement:

Reward your pet with treats, cuddles, and praise as they explore their new home. This positive reinforcement will help them associate the new environment with positive feelings.

6. Patience is Key:

Remember, every pet is different, and adjusting to a new environment takes time. Be patient and understanding. Allow them the time they need to feel secure and at home.
