Moving Hearts and Homes: Top 5 Mistakes to Avoid When PCSing to O’ahu

There’s an old saying in the military community, “Home is where the military sends us.” And when that destination is as breathtaking as O’ahu, it’s hard not to be excited. But as a military spouse who has made the journey myself, I can affirm that the process can be just as nerve-wracking as it is thrilling. From the endless logistics to the emotional roller coaster, PCSing can be overwhelming. That’s why I’m sharing the top five mistakes you should avoid when PCSing to O’ahu.

Mistake 1: Failing to Plan Ahead

When I received my first PCS order, I underestimated the planning it required. But quickly, I learned that the key to a smoother transition is early preparation. Start by organizing important documents in a PCS binder and researching about O’ahu – its culture, climate, cost of living, etc. If you have children, initiate the process for school transfer early.

Mistake 2: Overpacking

Being a pack rat is easy when you’re preparing to move your entire life across the ocean. You might feel the urge to pack everything “just in case,” but from my experience, it’s unnecessary and burdensome. O’ahu offers ample shopping options, so only focus on essentials, unique items, and belongings with sentimental value.

Mistake 3: Disregarding Quarantine Laws

If you’re bringing your pet to Hawaii, heed this warning from someone who’s an expert – Hawaii’s pet quarantine laws are stringent. Begin your pet’s rabies shots and paperwork at least 120 days in advance to qualify for direct airport release, or else your furry friend might have to stay in quarantine for up to 120 days.

Mistake 4: Misunderstanding Your Entitlements

Each PCS move comes with entitlements to help shoulder the financial burden. I confess, during our first PCS move, I didn’t fully grasp all these benefits. Do not make the same mistake. Make sure you understand what’s covered, such as Dislocation Allowance (DLA), Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) or Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA), and others.

Mistake 5: Neglecting Emotional Well-being

Amid the chaos of the move, it’s easy to forget the emotional toll that PCSing can take. Your feelings are valid, and so are your spouse’s and children’s. Take time to discuss these emotions, reassure each other, and perhaps find little ways to make this mammoth task fun and memorable.

While PCSing to O’ahu, or anywhere, has its set of challenges, avoiding these common mistakes can make your journey smoother and more manageable. Remember, it’s more than just a move; it’s a new chapter filled with unique experiences and adventures.
